What Happens When a Scorpion Stings My Dog?

If you’re a southwest Arizona homeowner, then you’re likely wary of encounters with a scorpion. While most scorpion stings are not considered harmful to humans, a naturally curious dog could have an unfortunate meeting with a scorpion.

Most scorpion stings on dogs aren’t going to be fatal, but they will likely experience a bit of pain or discomfort for several hours. When your dog meets a scorpion and is a bit worse for wear afterward, make sure to call your veterinarian and keep an eye on their behavior.

Signs Your Dog Has Been Stung by a Scorpion

Scorpions are nocturnal creatures and do most of their hunting and other activity at night. If your dog has recently been stung, you may not even realize it happened right away as the symptoms may be similar to any other insect bite or sting with a bit of discomfort at the site, such as tingling, soreness or numbness. If you’re unsure if your pet was stung by a scorpion, watch for the following sting symptoms:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Unsteady breathing
  • Trouble urinating or defecting
  • Excessive drooling or vomiting
  • Abnormal behavior

For some dogs — possibly smaller breeds or older dogs — more severe symptoms can occur, especially if stung by the more dangerous Arizona bark scorpion. If you see your dog exhibiting serious or extreme side effects, such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular irregularities, neurological oddities or collapse, take your dog to the vet right away.

How to Treat a Scorpion Sting on a Dog

If you start to notice your dog acting different and exhibiting signs of a scorpion sting, try to keep them comfortable and contact your veterinarian for further instructions. If you can’t get to a veterinarian promptly, wash the area carefully with cool water and apply a compress. Try to keep the sting site elevated above the dog’s heart. If possible, try to remove the stinger using a pair of tweezers. Avoid giving your dog any medications unless a veterinarian gives you permission.
