How to Prevent Termite Infestations

Among almost all of the other states, subterranean termites call Arizona home. They build huge nests and feed on several different types of wood. These termites thrive in the desert conditions of Arizona. This is why it is important to know how to prevent termites from destroying your home or business. While infestations can be treated, the best thing to do is prevent the infestation from taking place. Here are some helpful ways to stop termites before they become a problem:

Fix Leaks

signs of termite damage in arizonaIf they can’t eat it, they won’t! That’s right. Subterranean termites can only feast on wood that has been moistened by water. Eliminating leaks will make it harder for termites to find edible wood. Being informed of the history of your home or business where plumbing issues were a concern can be very useful. This will provide a starting point for identifying possible sources for leaks. Sinks, tubs, washer hookups, toilets, etc should be thoroughly inspected as well.

Biological Pest Control

Stir up some good luck with ladybugs! Nematodes are a fantastic and natural way to prevent termite infestations. There are several different types of nematodes available for purchase. Nematodes survive in the same conditions as subterranean termites. These useful insects eat termites. Be careful about where you put them, though. They will need a cool place that is shielded from direct sunlight. Make sure you read the directions that come with these if you decide to go this route. Some research on which types of nematodes are best for your home or business and how to properly use them would be beneficial.

Just the thought of termites eating away at the structure of your home or business can make you want to barricade yourself in. Get out your shovel and start digging! Build a three-foot-deep trench all the way around the border of the building and fill it in with a mixture of sand and diatomaceous earth at a ratio of 9:1. What is diatomaceous earth, or DE? DE consists of tiny fossilized water organisms. These fossils are sharp and dry. When insects are exposed to DE, their bodies are cut by the sharp edges and the DE absorbs the oils from the insects. This dries them out and kills them. If you want to abstain from using harsh chemicals, this is a great natural preventative measure to take. DE can also be used with water or paint to treat the outside of a building. Another way to incorporate DE into the preventative measures you take against termites is to mix it with orange oil and spray the mixture on exposed wood in your home or business, areas such as attics and crawl spaces are important places to treat.
