Beware Bed Bug Scams!
Bed bugs have been a steadily increasing problem in the United States for some time now. Over the last several years, the population of these little pests has spiked over five hundred percent. As the population of bed bugs has boomed, so has the business of those who are paid to get rid of them. Exterminators make your house unlivable for several hours to several days, often for an exorbitant fee, all in the name of getting rid of the pestilence of bed bugs. For all that trouble and money, you will be able to rest assured that these companies will at the very least get rid of the bugs, right? Well, you may not rest as assured as you may think.
There has been a recent trend becoming apparent around the country: bed bug scams. Companies and individuals billing themselves as exterminators will come to your house, fumigate, charge you and arm and a leg for your trouble, and you come back into your house only to find that you are not only missing a significant amount of money, but that the bed bugs which you paid the money to have removed are still in your house.
In addition to fake exterminations, there has been a rise in a market of home remedies for bedbugs. Companies are selling mixtures of herbs, or else “electromagnetic pulse devices” that are advertised as fool proof ways to remove bedbugs, but experts are in unanimous agreement that there is no evidence of any of these products have an affect on bed bug infestations.
There are several simple steps one can take to ensure that whoever has claimed to remove bedbugs will actually, in fact, remove the bed bugs. For one thing, it pays to make sure the individual or company is in fact licensed, and for how long. For another, as strange as it may seem, if the company or individual has a bug sniffing dog, check the dogs license, and see how long the dog has been working with its trainer. Finally, it never hurts to ask around. Find friends or neighbors who had bed bugs, or a trusted pest control company, and ask which company they go through. When it comes to the sanitary issues, discomfort, and potential financial stress of bed bugs, it is absolutely always better to be safe than to be sorry.
